Exploring who we are and why we are here
Theosophy Library
Amazing Selection of Books

Auckland Theosophical Centre Library has available to members a unique collection of sacred texts and significant works on philosophy, science, and the world’s religions. Prominence is given to the ancient traditions of the world, with sacred texts and commentaries arranged in the historical, cultural, and geographical context in which they evolved. In this way, the reader can follow the recurrent ideas that have helped people of all cultures find a deeper meaning in life.

Also included is a wealth of material on Western Philosophy, comparative religion and mythology, Theosophy, Mysticism, Alchemy, Masonry and material from various Ancient Wisdom Traditions as well as leading-edge fields of science.

The primary objective of the Library is to provide the resources for each to research into the Ancient Wisdom Traditions and their relevancy for today with particular regard to The Society’s Mission:  To serve humanity by cultivating an ever deepening understanding and realisation of the Ageless Wisdom, spiritual self-transformation, and the Unity of all Life..

The First Members in New Zealand

The birth of Theosophy in New Zealand did not take place in Auckland although this city has always been the centre of the Theosophical Society in this country. Mr Augustine Les Edgar King was the first New Zealand member, having joined when on a visit to London. His Diploma is dated 3rd April 1879 and on his return to New Zealand he became the first member of the Society in the Southern Hemisphere.

Mr Thomas G de Remzy of Dunedin joined in January 1883 and at the end of that year Mr & Mrs James Cox became members in Auckland. Col. Olcott writing of Mr Cox says: “He had such a reputation as a psychometrist principally by way of distinguishing disease that he made a good living by practising the profession, constantly going between Auckland and Sydney to see his patients; Mr E.T. Sturdy whom Col. Olcott referred to as the “Father of Theosophy in New Zealand”, joined the Society in 1885 while living at Woodville in Hawkes Bay. After travelling overseas and meeting Col. Olcott, H.P. Blavatsky and W.Q. Judge he returned to New Zealand and settled in Wellington. Gathering a group of students around him he started the Wellington Lodge which was chartered in 1888. Unfortunately this, the first lodge in New Zealand, ceased to exist when Mr Sturdy returned to England, where he became a student in H.P.B.’s “inner group”.

Tim Boyd and Dr. Kavita Beri Interview

What is Theosophy? What are its' core principles? Is it a religion? Can you be a member of the Theosophical Society and still follow a religion, or be an atheist, or a scientist? International President of the Theosophical Society Tim Boyd answers these questions and more in a riveting interview with Dr. Kavita Beri, a renowned physician, scientist and professor.

Who We Are:

The Auckland Theosophical Centre

The Theosophical Society was established in Auckland in 1892 with the object of promoting the exploration of Theosophy in the community. Theosophy is a Greek word which translates to Divine Wisdom. The Theosophical Society today maintains that there has always been knowledge of this Wisdom Tradition, traces of which can be found in all the religions of the world, in the sacred texts left by the Ancients, in the myths and traditions of each country and the discoveries by modern science. As individuals and as an organisation we endeavour to explore these traditions so we may come to know Who we are, Where we are going and Why we are here.

We hold study programmes where we invite all who are interested to join us in our exploration of the Divine Wisdom and through that come to know our Self. We also offer programmes for members should you wish to join the Society. We endeavour to help the community through various types of services including through the Theosophical Order of Service in New Zealand

The Society imposes no dogmatic view on its members. We respect the right of each individual’s point of view on their own journey of understanding and ask that those who participate in our programmes do the same for others present.

Most events are complimentary, although a small donation to help cover costs is always appreciated. We welcome new people to come to our introductory series starting on Thursday 23 March at 7.30 pm. These evenings are an opportunity to meet with like minded enquirers of the Ancient Wisdom to gain an understanding of what Theosophy and the Theosophical Society is all about. All are welcome!
